British finance minister Rachel Reeves on Tuesday signalled the prospect of broad tax increases to steer Britain away from another era of “austerity,” describing her upcoming budget as one built on “hard choices” aimed at safeguarding public services while reducing national debt.
With just three weeks until she delivers her second annual budget, Reeves outlined the tough economic landscape she faces — a surge in public debt following the COVID-19 pandemic, years of weak productivity, and persistently high inflation.
Her remarks hinted at the politically difficult decision to potentially break Labour’s election promise not to raise any of the major taxes, in a bid to reassure investors that the government remains committed to responsible borrowing.
Britain’s borrowing costs remain the highest among major advanced economies, though they have eased in recent weeks. Reeves’ comment that “we will all have to contribute” helped push 30-year gilt yields — which had climbed to their highest level since 1998 in September — down to their lowest since April.
‘NO EASY ANSWERS’
Reeves reaffirmed her commitment to balancing the government’s current budget by 2029/30, excluding capital investment.
“As I make decisions on both tax and spending, I will do what is necessary to shield families from high inflation and interest rates — and to protect our public services from a return to austerity,” she said during a press briefing.
Rejecting the quick fixes of previous administrations, Reeves said she would not pursue “short-term sticking plaster solutions,” calling such approaches “irresponsible.”
Her remarks, which placed responsibility for the current economic strain squarely on past Conservative governments, suggested that Labour could be preparing to raise one of the key taxes — income tax, value-added tax, or national insurance — as part of its fiscal reset.
