Britain and the European Union will hold their second bilateral summit on July 22, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Tuesday, as the government continues efforts to strengthen post-Brexit relations and deepen cooperation with the bloc.
“My Labour government is delivering on our promise to reset our relationship and put Britain at the heart of Europe,” Starmer said in a post on X.
“Together we will tackle the cost of living, boost jobs and create opportunities for young people.”
Starmer, who is facing increasing political pressure from within his own party, has positioned closer ties with the EU as a central part of his strategy to boost economic growth and help ease cost-of-living pressures facing households.
Last month, the Prime Minister said he wanted to achieve a “big leap” forward in UK-EU relations at this year’s summit, describing stronger engagement with the bloc as a foundation for future collaboration across a range of areas, including trade, defence and security.
The government is also seeking progress in negotiations with the EU on key issues such as steel tariffs, food standards and energy cooperation as part of its broader agenda to improve economic and strategic ties.
Following a meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa on Tuesday at a G7 summit in France, a spokesperson for Starmer’s office said the two leaders had said that “a closer relationship was vital for European security, resilience and prosperity.”
